Sony PS 5 — What we know about the next generation of consoles
Fans have had time to wait, but finally, after a long wait, Sony spoke about the next console in its model line — Sony PlayStation 5. While not everything is known, but we have put together all the data.
The chief architect of the console recently revealed that the company is indeed working on a successor to the PlayStation 4 and 4 Pro. He did not specify the exact release date, but said that it will be released in 2020 during the holiday season, that is, closer to Christmas. But what he agreed to share is some details about what the new console will be like and what we can expect from the hardware on it.
Such a message did not become news, because sooner or later we expected the appearance of the five, and most likely, it should have appeared around the same time as Microsoft’s Xbox Project Scarlett.
So, as we said, some of the console’s specs have finally been revealed, so there are a few things we know for sure.
The octa-core processor from AMD is based on the 3rd generation Ryzen architecture, and the GPU inherits the best from the Radeon Navi GPU. In addition, PS5 will receive an SSD drive, 3D audio, and compatibility with the PS4 game library.
This, of course, is not all. PSVR will work great on PS5, and is it any wonder? The PS5 will also support 8K resolution. All this has already been confirmed and is definitely of interest, since all the most modern parameters can make the fifth console not only worthy, but a mandatory upgrade option from the previous device.
The appearance of the console is still a mystery. So far, we have not seen any photos or renders of the device, even leaks and rumors on the Internet have not yet appeared. The same goes for the price, although it can be assumed that the cost of the PS5 will be quite high. However, curiosity on this subject will have to be put aside for the time being, so we can focus more closely on the internal characteristics of the console.
The power of RAM and video memory that Sony promised us opens up great opportunities. For example, according to the same Mark Czerny, the console architect, it will use ray tracing, which means that the graphics will look in a new way and the immersion effect will become even more natural.
Support for 8K TV is an application not only for the present, but also for the future. Who knows how many more years we have to live before the next console upgrade? During this time, 8K may well become the standard. And besides, this means that the textures will be more detailed.
The SSD drive, in turn, will take care of faster launch of games and applications. And this is a sign that we are waiting for games that are harder and better designed than before. The new SSD, according to rumors, should also be even faster than we are used to. But you will still need to download the games, and besides, it will add points to the cost.
The optical drive will remain in place, so games from 100GB optical discs will be supported. By the way, the drive can also serve as a 4K Blu-Ray player.
The interface will also be redesigned. “We don’t want the player to download the game, watch what’s up, download the game, watch what’s going on,” Mark Czerny told Wired.
Multiplayer servers will allow the player to participate in real-time events, single player games will display available missions and rewards, all this will be available in the interface and can be accessed at any time.
The sound capabilities of the new console were not left without attention. Namely, the sound will reach the “gold standard”. All this will happen thanks to the new immersive audio system. This will be especially noticeable when using headphones. More precise details have not yet been revealed to us, but most likely, we should expect something in the spirit of Dolby Atmos.
Cloud gaming, however strange it may sound, will also be improved, as will the graphics.
In general, the two key areas that Sony plans to pursue, directly from the interview materials, are immersion and smoothness. So a unique experience awaits all players, and all thanks to the new hardware, memory and graphics capabilities.
Sony pays a lot of attention to the cloud game, unfairly ignoring the Remote Play system that has not taken root. The new plan builds on the Playstation Now which they say will provide a smooth experience anytime, anywhere.
Remote Play is available now for PS4, but it’s not the future as Sony focuses on speed and 5G capabilities.

Looking closely at Sony’s April announcement, the company’s representatives were already talking about a new SSD format that is 19 times faster than before. And the company’s patent does describe equipment designed to completely rid us of the loading screen.
PS 5 will also allow its players to play PS4 games with those who play on the previous generation of consoles.
The PS5 is also rumored to support games for earlier models, but there is no confirmation of this yet. Although, if there is ever a good time for such an innovation, it is right now, when nostalgia for retro games is especially popular.
No less important than the console itself and its controller. PS5 will get its own model, DualShock will become a thing of the past, although the name and functionality of the new system is not yet known. However, this is again meant to improve the immersion effect.
Adaptive triggers are also planned for the controller, they have been included in the L2/R2 buttons. They will allow developers to program the resistance of buttons to more accurately simulate actions.
So, it is clear that the PlayStation 5 will be the most advanced console from Sony. It’s even more obvious that the company will be in a new fight with Xbox for the title of the best, and after the PS4 Pro, Sony still leads in popularity. Depending on the price and new games that will arrive in time for release, it will become more clear what will be the fate of this console. In the meantime, we can say for sure that expectations are high and it will not be as easy to justify them as before.
It remains only to wait for the festive season of 2020 and finally compare both new items in order to choose the most worthy one.
