Headphones Audio Technica ATH-M50x are the ideological continuation of the closed monitor headphones ATH-M50, released already 10 years ago. Audio Technica’s marketers finally realized that 10 years is too long for one model and it’s time to update a very successful solution.

The ATH-M50x are mid-range professional monitor headphones. Its predecessor, the ATH-M50, has proven to be a reliable workhorse for audio engineers, sound engineers and other audio industry professionals. The sound picture produced by it was defined by many as balanced, but at the same time saturated and not overloaded. Almost everyone who came across them spoke positively about them. Many gave these headphones the “Best Choice” award in the under $200 category.

Well, let’s see if the ATH-M50x turned out so well. First, let’s take a look at the main features:

Headphones are delivered in a box, a fairly simple box. Inside — stamping from recycled paper, green technologies in action. There are three types of wires under the central cardboard cup: two straight wires with a two-way mini-jack of different lengths and one twisted wire with a 6.3 mm jack that stretches up to 3 m. computer or work in the studio. In addition, the set includes a pouch with ties for carrying headphones, made of artificial leather.

The main difference from the previous model becomes immediately clear: in the ATH-M50x, the cord is removable, and the connector has a lock that will not allow the cord to slip out. Connection is made to the left cup, like most professional models.

The weight of the earbuds and the comfort of the ear cushions allow you to wear the earphones for a long time. So, for two hours of continuous listening to music, we did not have any desire to take them off our heads. Soundproofing is excellent. True, due to the closeness and dense material of the ear cushions, the ears may start to sweat, especially in a warm, unventilated room. The ear pads are also made of faux leather.

The cups on the ATH-M50x are rotatable. They can be folded into a transport state — in this form, the headphones fit into the case more easily. In addition, they are convenient for listening in one ear, which can be useful for DJs.

The sound quality of the headphones is very, very decent. The sound is balanced, there is very little distortion, mids and highs are highly detailed. Some experts note a slightly shifted low-frequency line, but we did not notice this. Overall, I really liked the sound. Headphones have a good power reserve, which virtually eliminates distortion. Definitely one of the benchmarks for sound quality in this price range.

Audio Technica turned out to be good closed monitor headphones, which are worthy heirs of the ATH-M50 ancestor. The sound picture given out by them is impartial, they do not embellish the sound. You will best experience the sound quality produced by headphones with good Hi-Fi equipment. Of course, you can find more interesting and more expensive options, but the ATH-M50x is one of the best in its price range.
